Mount the most active in the world, Merapi, currently being stretched. Community anxiously waiting for, whether it will erupt and send the next catastrophe. Moreover, the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVG) has raised the status of Merapi to be Watch out, starting from Monday, October 25, 2010.
History records, since 1548, Merapi has erupted 68 times, with small eruptions occur every 2-3 years, and the larger about 10-15 years. Massive eruption had occurred among others in 1006, 1786, 1822, 1872, and 1930.
Large eruption in 1006 made the whole central part of Java island shrouded in gray. In 1930, the eruption of Merapi, destroying 13 villages and killed 1370 people.
Merapi last eruption occurred in 2006. On June 4, 2006, reported that the volcanic activity has surpassed the status of 'alert'.
Then on June 8, 2006, Mount Merapi erupted at 9:03 pm by spewing hot clouds that made thousands of residents in the area of slope panic and flee to safety.
Merapi eruption phenomenon did not escape the observation of NASA. U.S. space agency is to record the condition of Merapi through satellite photos. The first photo recorded the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission equipment and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA's Terra satellite on April 26, 2006.
It showed hot clouds emerged from the summit of Merapi, which is surrounded by black lava and debris before the eruption. The slope of the mountain looks red.
The second photo on June 6, 2010 is also an ASTER shots. The red color in the photos indicate and a brighter vegetation is plants. Awan illustrated with bright colors or white opaque. Meanwhile, the volcanic clouds appear dark gray blowing towards the southwest. (Kd)
